The Role of Community in Creating a Stronger Business

Why Building Community is the Key to Business Success

Building community isn’t just a nice idea—it’s the glue that holds everything together. Whether it’s through creative collaborations, thoughtful conversations, or shared experiences, I’ve learned that building real connections takes more than good vibes. It takes action, honesty, and creating spaces where people feel like they belong.

But here’s the thing: community-building doesn’t just matter for personal fulfillment—it’s also deeply tied to business success. When people connect with your brand, your mission, or your space, they stick around, support your work, and champion it to others. Let’s talk about how these lessons translate to business.

Lesson 1: Listen First, Speak Second

You can’t build a thriving community—or a loyal customer base—if you don’t understand what people need. If I’m working with a client or brainstorming a new project, I start by listening. What are the gaps your audience is experiencing? What recurring issues or unmet needs are they facing? In business, this means going beyond surface-level feedback and digging into the root causes of challenges in your field. Eliminating the frictions and paying close attention to details. When you show people that you understand them and over deliver, you’re not just building trust—you’re building loyalty.

Lesson 2: Lead by Example

Community isn’t about having a thriving social media page. It’s about creating an environment where people feel empowered and seen. In business, this translates to leading with transparency and integrity. Customers and collaborators want to know you’re consistent, present, and genuinely invested in their experience. When I started building creative communities, I didn’t have all the answers, but showing up and admitting my wrongdoings created a ripple effect. No one is perfect and we live in a fast paced world. Learning as we go is only natural—and that’s true in any business setting.

Lesson 3: Welcome Feedback

Every person—or customer—brings value to the table. Recognizing that builds trust and strengthens relationships. I've seen business owners or leaders often dismiss criticism or feedback. This is so wrong. If someone is taking the time to write down or tell you how they felt about your event, offer or product, it's them giving you a second chance. They care enough to take some of their time to engage in a conversation with you or your business. Don't get me wrong, there will always be bullies, but you can distinguish them from criticism. Listen, take notes, learn.

Lesson 4: Embrace the Chaos

Let’s be real: whether you’re building a community or a business, things will go sideways. A supplier might fall through, or a campaign might not hit the mark. Embracing those moments with flexibility and humour can turn challenges into opportunities. Share those stories with your audience. There's always a silver lining, and they will love you more for it. Imperfection doesn’t weaken your brand—it humanizes it, and that’s what people connect with. If things don’t work out, it might be because there’s a lesson to learn, something better is coming, or you’re not talking to the right person. As Kris Jenner puts it, when someone says no, it’s either because you’re not asking the right questions or talking to the wrong person. Adjusting your approach can make all the difference in finding success.

Why It Matters

Community-building isn’t just about fostering connections—it’s the foundation for a sustainable brand and meaningful impact. When done right, it creates loyal audiences, fosters trusted relationships, and builds a network of champions who want to see you thrive. But it takes action, not just promises. People notice when businesses follow through and deliver on what they say. That trust and effort turn into genuine relationships that go the distance. For me, building community is about designing spaces and experiences that truly resonate. It’s about being consistent, intentional, and making every detail count. Communities that grow over time are built on these solid foundations.

What’s Next

Community-building isn’t a finish line—it’s an ongoing journey. Think about the next step you can take to strengthen your connections. Is it reaching out for feedback? Creating a space for collaboration? Or simply showing up and staying consistent? Whatever it is, keep the momentum alive. Every small action builds toward something bigger. To help you get started, here’s a quick checklist for building stronger connections:

  • Identify gaps in your community or business interactions.
  • Actively listen to feedback and implement what resonates.
  • Show up consistently and authentically.
  • Celebrate small wins and recognize contributions.
  • Stay flexible and embrace challenges as opportunities. If this sparked ideas or inspiration, let’s keep the conversation going. Together, we can explore what’s next and create something meaningful.
