Pivotal Moments
Pivotal Moments began as a collaboration between the Ottawa Design Club and the New York Design Club. Through years of hosting speaker events, we noticed that audiences rarely connected with polished portfolios. They connected with the moments of doubt, risk, and change that reshaped a creative life.
That observation became the foundation of the project. More than eighty interviews across North America and Europe informed the editorial direction before thirty stories were selected for the final publication. The project was later presented through exhibitions in both New York and Ottawa, extending the conversation beyond the page.
Editorial Design
Unlike previous Ottawa Design Club publications, Pivotal Moments was driven by narrative rather than artwork. The challenge was designing more than thirty long-form stories in a way that felt cohesive while giving every contributor's voice equal weight.
Typography became part of the storytelling. Quotes reappeared throughout the publication, mirrored layouts referenced moments of change, and Non Ophelie's expressive ligatures reinforced the idea of transformation. Silver and white dry inks printed with Xerox Iridesse technology, together with a lenticular cover, introduced subtle movement that rewarded closer reading without distracting from the stories themselves.

From Page to Space
The editorial system extended into exhibitions at Seven House Gallery in New York and Wallack Galleries in Ottawa. Quotes from the publication were enlarged, suspended throughout the galleries, and reimagined as environmental graphics, allowing visitors to move through the stories rather than simply read them.
Across both cities, contributors shared their stories publicly, turning the exhibitions into spaces for conversation, reflection, and connection. Together, the publication and exhibitions demonstrated how editorial design can move beyond the printed page to create shared cultural experiences.
